History
Vitebsk Technological Institute of Light Industry was opened on July 24, 1965. The teaching staff included 49 people who worked at 6 departments. The institute got the status of a University for its substantial achievements on April 20, 1995. Vitebsk State Technological University is situated in one of the central streets of the city. It is an academic-scientific- production complex, comprising 7 faculties, a library, a post-graduate course, a regional centre for testing, and an experimental works. There are four academic buildings, two halls of residence, a students’ canteen, a health unit, a sanatorium-preventorium, a stadium, and a sports complex.

Halls of residence. Double rooms and rooms for three persons. A bathroom and a kitchen for 10 people. The cost of one place is $27 per month ($326 per year).
Sports Facilities
There are two gymnasiums in the academic buildings. In the University sports complex there are two gymnasiums, two swimming-pools, a hall with training apparatuses, and a restoration centre. In the building of hall of residence №3 there is a room equipped for engaging in arm-wrestling and power-lifting. Near the halls of residence there is a stadium.

Student Life
There is a students’ club, sports clubs for track and field athletics, swimming, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, arm-wrestling, power-lifting, mini-football, skiing, boxing, chess and draughts in the University. There are also the following hobby groups and clubs: students’ folk choreographic ensemble “Vitebchanka”, a group of variety dance (preparatory and main groups), a vocal music group, a workshop of solo singing, a theatre workshop “KVN”, a theatre workshop “KVN- Pit-stop”, a consort of the Faculty of Artistic Design and Technology, a students’ theatre of miniatures, club “Znatoki” (Experts), a hobby group for study of flora, a literary society, etc.
