History
Vitebsk State Medical Institute was founded in November 1934. Up to 1941 organization of the Faculty of General Medicine with 32 departments was completed. In 1959 Pharmaceutical Faculty was opened. In a year post-graduate training was provided. Starting from September 1981 training of foreign citizens in the faculties of Preliminary Training, General Medicine and Pharmacy was organized. In connection with the increasing of the number of foreign students the Overseas Students Training Faculty was founded. For great merits in training medical staff for numerous countries of Asia, Africa, the Near East and Latin America the institute was awarded with the Order of People’s Friendship.

Campus Information Foreign citizens live in a 12-storeyed international hostel of a flat type, consisting of dwelling blocks each of them includes 2 rooms, isolated WC, bathroom and attached kitchen. The standard accommodation fee for a place in a room in 2010-2011 academic year is approximately 300 USD per year, but it can vary depending on the size of the room. There are gyms, concert halls, international club, canteens, cafes, rooms for rest, computer clubs with high-speed Internet connections, etc. in the hostel. The reading halls work throughout the night. |

Sports Facilities
Students are offered an opportunity to go in for different kinds of sports in a sports club or in sports grounds (tennis, volleyball, football, cricket, basketball, etc.) Annually various competition are organized. For example, cricket and chess tournaments, football and volleyball championships became a good tradition.
Annually the Department of Russian language together with the Dean’s Office of the Overseas Students Training Faculty organizes traditional evening party “Russian Tea” for the students of the Preliminary Training Faculty and the students of the 1st-2nd courses of the Overseas Students Training Faculty in order to acquaint them with traditions of Byelorussian and Russian people, history of VSMU, Vitebsk and Republic of Belarus.
